Plastic has entered our planet in 1870. John Wesley Hyatt, an American extracted plastic from a material called celluloid. By 2015, the world produced 322 million tons of plastic. But realization of adverse impact of plastic on environment has dawned. Today, the world has to struggle to recover from plastic deluge. In this battle, against plastic human must achieve victory and, failing that, plastic will lay us to the rest. If human is the part of problem, human can be a part of solution to that problem. The recent call of avoiding the single-use of plastic sound convincing. It is going to be just a step forward friendly to Nature considering the host of human activities which are detrimental to Nature. The natural environment is dying for a much-needed respite from plastic pollutant. The move is laudable given the disastrous effect of this nuisance on our planet. It should have been a reality long ago, because non-biodegradable plastic has already taken toll on the health of environment, but better late than never.

Though the impact of climate change and global warming has been acutely felt in Manipur, there have been but little action to curb the crisis.

The state has become hotter by 1oC with the result that the monsoons are erratic. It may be recalled that there was a flood in 2018. And in 2019 monsoon failed plunging the state into a drought.

The effect of the successive flood and drought is the creation of a famine-like situation. Rice sells at Rs. 50/kilogram and the scarcity of rice has led to a steep rise in the price of vegetables.

Meghalaya Youth Congress protest outside GHADC

The Meghalaya Youth Congress today protest outside the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) in protest against the non-cooperation of the Chief Executive Member (CEM) Dipul Marak who refuses to resign and is absconding after they lost the floor test.

MPYC President Richard Marak said that the action of incompetence CEM by absconding is an absolute and blatant disregard for the democratic process. Their EC has already been voted out. They brought this upon themselves by their incompetence. Moreover, there was even an attempt to manipulate the number of votes after the fact. They should understand that GHADC is not their personal property that they can do anything at will."

Richard Marak also went on to say that under him the EC tries to subvert the process of tendering for the haats by illegal means, namely allotting them without free and fair process and signing the orders backdated, which would not be the first time.

"Our sources also tell us that certain high ranking staffs are doing the bidding of the Minister for District Council Affairs, James Sangma, on the promise of promotions and other benefits thereby allowing Dipul Marak and his EC to break the rules and loot the GHADC He added.

"Therefore, we demand that Dipul Marak and the EC that has been voted out take responsibility and resign following the very laws that they took oath to uphold when they were voted as Members of the District Council."
