“Independence Has Hampered North East’s Development”
- Governor of Meghalaya R.S. Mooshahary
His Excellency the Governor of Meghalaya R. S. Mooshahary while inaugurating the international seminar entitled ‘From Land Locked to Land Linked: North East India in BIMSTEC’ which was recently held at Shillong said that independence has actually made the region more remote than it was during pre – independence days. Agartala which was 300 kms away from Calcutta (now renamed Kolkata), as a result of the redrawing of international borders is now 1600 kms away from Kolkata. This has had an adverse effect on the economy and psyche of the people belonging to the region. The Governor of Meghalaya feels that besides economic development, emotional integration holds the key for bringing about peace and progress. That is to say, the Governor implies that without emotional integration, economic development can not take place.
