The recent tragedy of a boat carrying around 36 passengers having capsized near the Aswaklanta temple ghat of Brahmaputra River in Guwahati has raised several questions on the safety procedures governing the inland water transport system in Assam. In the incident which occurred on 5 September, a country made boat fitted with an engine, popularly known as bhutbhuti was carrying passengers from the Fancy Bazaar ghat in Guwahati to North Guwahati’s Madhyam Khanda, when the engine developed a technical snag and hit an under construction water supply project and overturned.

Campaign in Sar (sandbar)  area was  an uphill task for Poshan Abhiyan where high incidence of malnutrition prevailed which continued  from the month of September. In sar areas, drinking water, sanitation and health service are extremely in poor condition where high incidence of malnutrition prevails and 25 percent of total 21 lakh population as per 2011 Census, live there in Dhubri district of Assam.

The Congress has chalked out temple-visits for the party President for his future election tours in the state where assembly poll is due in November-December. In the poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, the Congress is offering itself to the voters as a more Hinduised alternative of the ruling BJP. Lord Rama, cowsheds, religious tourism and temple-hopping are pet BJP fetishes. Now the Congress is promising the voter that it will do better work than the BJP on these Hindutva fronts, if voted to power.

Traffic rules in the world can be confusing. Americans drive on the right side of the road, the British drive on the left side of the road and Indians drive on any little open space available on the road. The irresistible urge to wedge your car into any available space on the road is so Indian. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Gujarat to Guwahati, tight squeezes are common scenes on the roads. We can go to any extent to claim the open space on the road. If the lane on the other side of the divider is open, we can even take that lane too. Even in Gurgaon and Noida, India’s ultramodern cities, it is not uncommon to see some desperate fellow Indian brethren braving all odds and coming head on right into your lane. Fatalities do take place in Indian underpasses from time to time as some callous drivers drive in from the wrong side.
