Letter from the Editor

April 2008

Dear Readers,

Dr. K. K.Jhunjhunwala

The time of elections is also the time when people at large are focused more on how the government has performed

and how the individual members of either the Legislative Assembly or Parliament are going to help in improving their comfort level. This comfort includes the process of development, opportunities for employment and proximity to power. Every individual citizen has reasons to believe in a particular party or candidate. In light of this, the elections to the 2008 Legislative Assemblies of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura have produced diverse results. Our cover story this month deals in depth with the verdict of the people. Though the results were as predicted by Eastern Panorama in its February 2008 issue, ultimately, the people’s final verdict is always directed towards the greater good and they have the final say in this matter.

In this issue, we have also carried an article on the recent racial killings in Manipur which is indeed a serious concern and a question on national integration. Manipur is not the only state where racial killings and racial harassment have been observed. Even the most developed state in the country, namely Maharashtra was in the news for racism. Assam too has had its share of racism. What really matters is the need to strengthen the regional structure of the country by developing its culture, language, tradition and economic development. Everybody, irrespective of which region he belongs to, should help in promoting such values which will result in the strengthening of relationships and growth of mutual trust. The unity of the country will be strengthened with the integration of different cultures and respect for each other, keeping ‘country first’ motto in mind.

With this issue, we have completed 16 years of dedicated service to the people of the Northeast and we thank everyone for their support which has enabled us to achieve this.
