FISH TOURISM 

The  Aqua Culture  mission in the  state  has  not  achieved  its  target  of  the  demand of 22,000 metric  tons  of  Fish  for  Meghalaya.  Now  the  worst  has  come,  that  fish  import  from  other  states  may  be  banned,  after detection  of formalin  in  fishes  in  other  areas  of  the  North  eastern  region, including  those imported  from  Odisha. However,  some  fish  merchants  from  Shillong would  undertake a tour to Andhra Pradesh  to finding  out  the  reality of  the  situation,  as  some  of  the fish merchants  have  invested  in  fish  ponds  in  Andhra Pradesh. At  present 21,000 metric  tons of  fish are  brought  into  the  state  from  Andhra  Pradesh,  Assam,  Odisha  and West Bengal. However  taking  no  chances,  even  local  fish  would  be  tested  for  formalin.  There is  however  already an existing laboratory at Pasture Institute, which  however  needs  to  be  upgraded.

PARTING OF WAYS 

The new Khasi Hills District Council Chief, H. S. Shylla  has  announced  parting  of  ways  with  Adelbert  Nongrum,  accusing  that  Nongrum  turned  up  late  during  the day  of  the  election,  and  that  Nongrum  had  failed  to  honour  an  agreement,  that  he  would  support  Shylla.  In  the meantime Adelbert Nongrum of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Party  (KHNAM), who is also a  member  of  the  Legislative  has  resigned  as  member  of  KHNAM,  being the lone  member  of  the  party  in  the  assembly. Nongrum  had  declared  that  he  would  neither support  the  treachery  bench  nor   the  opposition,  unless  certain conditions  are  spelled out,  including  the  approach  for  efficiency  of  the District Council employees,  and  a commitment  not  to  mine  uranium  in  the  state.

PLAN TO UNSEAT CONRAD 

The  UDP  in  the  Garo  Hills  have  gone  to  the  extent  of  an attempt  to  unseating   Conrad  K. Sangma  as  the  Chief  Minister  in  setting  up  a  candidate  against  him  in  the  South  Tura  constituency,  as  Conrad  has  to  seek  formal  elections  to  ensure  that  he  is  an  elected  representative to  the  State  Legislative  Assembly.  The  contention  of  the  Garo  Hills  unit  of  the  UDP is  that,  people  want  a  regional  party  to  head  the  government,  and  not  the  National People’s Party (NPP),  which  is  a  national  party. Conrad  on  the  other  hand  have  appealed  to  all  the  Meghalaya  Democratic  Alliance  to  support  his  candidature.

REGIONAL PARTY REBEL

In spite of the  fact  that  it  is  the  UDP,  which  had  joined  as part  of  forming  the  Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, and  taken the initiative in the making of Conrad  K.  Sangma,  as  the leader, the  regional UDP  unit  in  South  Tura  is  pulling  up  it selves  to fight  against  Conrad. In a meeting at Asanang in Garo Hills,  the  UDP  South  Tura  is  up  in  arms  against  Conrad.  The UDP central  leadership  therefore  seems  to  be  having  no  control on  its  units  in  different  parts  of  the  state,  a  bad  reflection  that  units  of  regional  parties are  behaving  independently. This is certainly a negative precedent upon the political scenario in Meghalaya, where political discipline is lacking. Certain screws  have  to  be  tighten  up  by  the  central  leadership  of  regional  parties  in  controlling  their  district  units.
