Why SC says no to yoga as compulsory subject in school?

The Supreme Court disagree with a petition filed by a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta to make Yoga compulsory in schools claiming that it was for the Centre to take a call on such issues. The Court clearly remind the jury that "RTE Act does not specifically mention about the curriculum of yoga hence it should only be an integral part of the curriculum of 'Health and Physical Education' in which schools affiliated with CBSE and who adopted NCERT curriculum and syllabus ‘Health and Physical Education' have already enforced from Class 1 to 10 and optional at Classes 11 and 12.

The Centre also clarified that majority of schools were under the control of States and Union Territories. Hence, it is the duty of the states and union territories to ensure that schools should followed the provisions of the NCF (National Curriculum Framework), under which yoga is only an integral part of 'Health and Physical Education' at all levels of school education.
