BY ANY MEANS

Independent candidate to the South Tura Constituency, Leslie K Sangma has been pulled up in a show cause notice that he had made a speech using inflammatory comments, against former legislator Agatha Sangma and her late father P. A. Sangma, by any means bringing about religious overtones in the election campaign. Leslie had been accused of deliberate accusing late P. A. Sangma as being converted to Hinduism, as during the speech, a video clip was shown P. A. Sangma accepting a “tikka” applied on his forehead, during his visit to a temple. This is a contravention that religion and caste cannot be included in election propaganda.

CURBING PLASTIC TOURISM

Tourist traffic in Shillong and different parts of the state have recorded an increase, especially during current summer season, where people would love to see and singing in the monsoon rains, especially in the Sohra region. However, many tourist spots in the state are littered with plastic waste, which is an eye sore and caught the attention of the government. The State Government would be imposing Section 144 CrPC, prohibiting use of polythene, as a means to check plastic waste. As most of the tourist spots are run by village durbars and private societies, an official order would be issued to keep tourist spots spotless clean, keeping up the name of Mawlynnong, being the cleanest village in the country and continent.

FISH THE PROBLEM

The people of Shillong, the neighborhood, are still facing the acute problem of no fish curry. The State Government which had banned import of fish because of the detection of Formalin for fifteen days, had extended another fifteen days for another reason. That the absence of fish in the market would encourage, fishing within the state, to benefit fishermen and increase production. Whether fifteen days is enough to meet the requirement of eighty thousand metric tons of fish in year, required. It is something beyond mathematical calculation and imagination.

Far from the madding crowds of the world and nestled in the lap of nature, the Seven Sisters of North Eastern India currently are under the sinister shadow of cross-border smuggling carried out by the Muslim smugglers of Bangladesh and mainly ethnic Chin people of Myanmar. These dangerous smugglers are getting emboldened day by day. They not only are carrying out smuggling operations most daringly in Meghalaya, Mizoram, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Nagaland but also killing local people and members of the Border Security Force and other paramilitary outfits guarding the long, porous borders that touch lawless Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Usually, we don’t ask a lady how old is she as it embarrasses her. Why? Most ladies, as the saying goes, attempts to hide their actual age. Hence, dislikes being asked how old she is? But one among the Seven Sisters of North Eastern India, Meghalaya, would proudly say she is 4,200 years old. But why should such an old lady among the Seven Sisters feels so proud about her age? This is due to the reason that all earthlings officially are now living in The Meghalayan Age: in her age, technically. Interesting, is not it? Equally interesting is the fact that The Meghalayan Age, among other things, is also known as the “Age of Destruction” be it the collapse of Indus Valley Civilization or the devastation of Pompeii due to eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum in 79 A.D.

The art of comedy has gone viral on television and social media. Lol (laugh out loud) is the mood. Cynically speaking, there is something seriously wrong with a society that is completely addicted to finding reasons to laugh out loud all the time. But maybe that is digging too deep and is not in the scope of this article. What is agonizingly irritating though is that comedy is being sprinkled with obscene, derogatory and cheap views of women. Seriously, how sexhungry must a society be to share such jokes and laugh about them publicly? Shameless, but we don’t even find it objectionable anymore!

The talk of the town from World Cup and now switching over to fish, the most popular commodity among all the communities in the capital city, also in the State and the entire region of North East India. Angling is one of the most popular sports in the rivulets, streams and river. But suddenly the word had spread in the fish markets, that ‘Formalin’ essentially being a preservative, yet can upset the health of the population has been laced on fish bodies, especially being imported from Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.
