Every year, we move ahead into the unknown. With New Year's resolution and lots of hope for a brighter future. We make promises to ourselves and to others, to be better versions of ourselves. We try to let go of the mistakes of the past, with a sense of renewal and opportunities for the future. This is what makes a New Year special, we get to look forward to endless possibilities.

The year 2020 was long-awaited, it carried a sense of entering the future we had been imagining since childhood. As we approached the end of 2019, things began developing in a negative direction. The worst was yet to follow. 2020 began with the most devastating pandemic since the Spanish flu, which affected the world a century ago. And just like many times before, another year ended, albeit very differently. After experiencing a pandemic of this extent, we welcome the approaching year with more meaning and hope. But what does it mean to have hope, when we have been collectively becoming more hopeless as a society?

New Agriculture law has turned into political issue.  A lot of misinformation is being spread by rumour mongers at the instance of those who do not want the farm laws to be brought in the agriculture sector. It is strange that these forces want the agriculture to remain primitive even in the 21st century but no government worth its name can allow itself to be capitulated or held hostage by a few thousand people, who have been assembled by the brokers, intermediaries and absentee landlords sitting in Canada or other countries. But the government will be failing in its duty, if these squatters continue to lay siege of the Capital city of Delhi for much longer.

Hopefully, the Modi Government will not allow such motivated people to create obstacles and obstructions in the freedom of the movement and inconvenience of the public.

Media undoubtedly is an important pillar that pumps oxygen into the lungs of democracy for its healthy growth and survival. But the question that is being asked is does media fulfills its obligations? Does it convey the news without any pride and prejudice? The importance of media can hardly be over emphasized. With the rapid development in technology, the media today is able to handle tonnes and tonnes of news and events all over the world in the shortest possible time. There are smaller siblings of media like internet, Facebook, Twitter, Satellite channels etc... all engaged in disseminating news to the people across the world. The North East India comprises 7 states often called seven sisters with one brother Sikkim added to this family. There is no other region in our country which so sumptuously mirrors our country's heterogeneous heritage as the North East as a whole. It is a kind of mini India.  North East India as a whole looks like an ocean of beliefs and dialects and the growth of media including the print media is quite encouraging.

“Love jihad” is widely believed to be a conspiracy theory used by right-wing groups who accuse Muslim men of converting Hindu women by marriage.  Now it is going to be a punishable offence in Madhya Pradesh as the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government is bringing a bill in the state assembly against forced religious conversion for marriage. Four other BJP-ruled states—Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Karnataka and Haryana—are in varying stages of introducing bills to criminalise what the party calls “love Jihad.”

The sudden uproar over penalising “Love Jihad “ appears to have been triggered by the murder of Haryana girl Nikita Tomar in October this year.  As the murder case continued to grab headlines with her family members alleging that the 21-year-old had been shot dead by a Muslim man whom she had refused to marry, BJP-led state governments announced they will pass laws to prohibit interfaith marriages involving forced conversion.

There is little dispute over the fact that Assam which is sarcastically called by many as the ‘Far-East’ of our country, having been geographically ‘out of sight out of mind’ syndrome of New Delhi for not being strong constituency as UP or Bihar, is essentially an agrarian state. But ironically, it has over the years become unpredictable as weather in summer due to global warming. In effect, the annual revenues the fund-strapped state earns from tea, agriculture, etc, are too meagre to undertake any profit-yielding infrastructural development projects in a town or city alone without financial assistance from the Centre and other financial establishments.

Mighty Teesta River, flowing through the Northeast India and holding key to the region’s prosperity through generation of power and other multipurpose projects, now has become the focal point of forthcoming Indo-Bangladesh talks.

The reason is long standing dispute between India and Bangladesh over sharing of its water. Dhaka wants lion’s share of water while Delhi is justifiably claiming more since the river originates in Sikkim. Dispute, as a result, continues.

Bangladesh also depends much on Teesta River as it also flows through this country like many other rivers which, though originated in India, terminates there. The stretch of Teesta River is about 121KM on which 21 million Bangladeshis depend. But India’s dependence on Teesta River is much more as it is the lifeline of Sikkim and North Bengal.
