This time in the local body elections held in Uttar Pradesh, all political parties have raised their own candidates. This is the first time that candidates are contesting on election symbols of their political parties in the local body elections. In the elections of the local body, BJP’s alliance has always been huge, whether it is Municipal Corporation, Municipality or a Nagar Panchayat. In most municipal corporations, the Mayor is from the BJP and more than 50 per cent of the municipalities and Nagar Panchayats have the BJP- backed candidate on the post of the President.
This time the local body elections have been taken by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his party BJP very seriously. This is the reason why BJP’s performance in these elections has improved even better than the results of earlier local body elections. It has been raised by the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath himself. The local body election result is like the ‘litmus test’ for Chief Minister Yogi. Yogi Adityanath, who has been affected by more than a decade of results with more than 50 Assembly seats in almost a dozen districts of Purvanchal, has had the opportunity to show political skills in the entire state. They have accepted the challenges of this opportunity.
This is probably the reason that he himself has been making election rallies in most of the districts of the entire state itself and together he has entrusted the responsibility of meeting both the Deputy Chief Ministers and Ministers in local body elections.
The focus of speeches of all BJP leaders during the meet was the ULB elections and they deliberated on possible challenges before the party in retaining its stronghold and how to overcome Opposition challenges. The stakes are high for the BJP as urban areas have been a traditional stronghold of the party and it has maintained its edge in Urban Local Bodies even when it was out of power in the State from 2002 to March 2017.
