The fresh tripartite agreement in response to Tripura government for settling 34000 odd displaced Brus in Tripura who had fled from western parts of Mizoram in 1997 turned the situation hostile. When Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) made tribals unhappy apprehending it an attempt to increase the population of non-tribals in the state, announcement of Bru settlement shut down anti-CAA revellers. However, the decision to settle Brus in Tripura has encouraged the creation of ethnocentrism in Northeast and it set a bad precedent in the country to sponsor displaced people from one state to other following communal pressure. Moreover, it indicated a clear sign of conflicts between the Brus and indigenous communities both tribal and non-tribals of Tripura. The Mizo people have been objecting Bru settlement in their homeland and despite at least 21 attempts of centre, Tripura and Mizoram government could not succeed the mission.

MPLU and HTTA threaten agitation on flawed of fastag process in Toll Gate

The Working Committee of the Meghalaya People's Labour Union (MPLU) and the Hynniewtrep Tourist Taxi Association (HTTA) today met the General Manager of the National Highway & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited Shillong against the failure and illegal use of the ‘Fastag System’ at Toll Gates located on the National Highways of Meghalaya.

In a memorandum submitted to the Manager, MPLU and HTTA cited that the Fastag system at Toll Gates on the National Highways of Meghalaya especially at the Umling Toll Gate (Pahammawlein) does not function properly.

The two Union blames that digital system in the Toll Gate is not working in a proper manner which leads to chaos, traffic snarls at the Toll Gates and wrong and illegal billings of tolls which are seriously affecting the flow of traffic leading to delay and frustration.

The Unions also accuse the Toll Gate creating a situation where money is illegally being charged from the commuters especially commercial vehicles leading to unnecessary controversy and suspicion of the system.

The Working Committee of the MPLU and HTTA have given seven (7) days notice to rectify the problems failing which the Unions will starts their agitation.

Mukul Sangma slam Government on Illegal Coal transportation

Leader of Opposition of the Government of Meghalaya Mukul Sangma today today accuse Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of shielding the truth of illegal coal transportation in the state. Mukul Sangma said that the denial of Conrad K Sangma on illegal transportation of coal in the state indicates the lack of knowledge from the part of the Chief Minister on the scenario of illegal transportation of coal.

Meghalaya Chief Minster Conrad K Sangma on 4^th February had denied that there is illegal coal transportation in the state.

“I urge the Chief Ministers and the Officers from the state to go outside their offices and see by their own eyes on the rampant illegal transportation in the State” he added.

Mukul Sangma also accused the State government of tampering with the evidences on transportation of coal by transferring officers from time to time. The Leader of Opposition (LO) also accused the state government of using its officers as pawns to facilitate illegal coal transportation by forcing the officers to obey the orders or face termination from its department. Mukul Sangma also accuses the state government of interfering with the ongoing investigation by the Crime Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged illegal coal transportation in the state.

Mukul Sangma warned strict action the Chief Minister and other officers of strict action for shielding the truth on coal transportation.
