HSPDP kicked off the Election Campaign at Malki Shillong

The Hills State Peoples Democratic Party (HSPDP), one of the oldest regional party in the state, has kicked off the election campaign at Madan Malki Shillong, amidst the chanting of the slogan “Ha U Sing”, the lion being the symbol of the party. It is a diehard political party, led by Hopingstone Lyngdoh, who had recently passed away, yet the party is keeping its flag high. During the Hill State movement, it was the HSPDP which rejected outright different forms of autonomy, which fall short of a fully fledged separate state, because of its steadfastness, it is expected that it would garner a number of seats which it would bargain for formation of a government, as a ruling partner.

The HSPDP propagate that Article 371 of the Constitution of India should also cover Meghalaya, for empowerment of the state to protect customary laws, specially on land and administration of justice.

HSPDP Chief Ardent Basaiawmoit, has raised the slogan of national unity of India, as “Unity in diversity”, to counter against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attempt to bring about “unity in uniformity”, as every part of Bharat Mata has its own separate identity.

Inconsistency in political phase of Meghalaya elections??

The process of the Meghalaya elections, though started, yet the pace has not been picking up. Not a single political party has declared the final list of candidates and the shuffling of the cards is still going and yet to be distributed. However the present trend is that quite a number of new faces would take part in the poll race. The mood of the voters just like the changing weather pattern is yet to be stabilised, as there is an en-masse shift of allegiance, from one party to another in many of the constituencies. In the Shella constituency, for instance, which is the stronghold-fortress of the United Democratic Party (UDP) of Donkupar Roy, there is a shift of allegiance, where most of the voters are now supporting the newly Peoples Democratic Party (PDF), which is a threat to the confident and unbeaten UDP leader Donkupar Roy.

The students accused CM for manhandling of public funds for Elections campaign

Probably it is the first time, in the Meghalaya elections, that a section of the students have been provoked, to be candid enough to speak out to vote against the party of the chief minister. The cause being that the students from the different colleges of Shillong, are having great doubts and suspicion, that most of them had not received the M-Tab, which is a part of the Student Digital Learning Aid Scheme. One of the students, Enlang Sawian, has straight away pointed out an accusing finger, that “the Congress has brought the scheme just to woo voters. Already an RTI has been filed by the Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC), that there is manhandling of the scheme involving rupees six crore. The student had made a frontal accusation, that the funds would be used for the elections. To clear any misapprehensions, the student community of the state, is seeking clarification from the Union Human Ministry of human resource development, and for instituting a CBI enquiry, if there is misappropriation of funds in the implementation of the scheme.

HNYF demand the immediate removal of B.D.O

A delegation of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) met the Minister in-charge C&RD Comingone Ymbon to demand the immediate removal of Block Development Officer (BDO) of Mawthadraishan community and rural development block before the end of this year.

Banlang Sohphoh, the organization Finance Secretary while speaking to media persons said that they want an experience Officers in place of incumbent BDO L. Diengdoh, besides the removal of L. Lyngdoh the organization also demanded the government to repair the building of the block office.

He informed the press that the minister has promise the delegation that he would look into the matter but have not given them any assurance as to when action will be taken; meanwhile Sohphoh said that the Union would be compelled to take stern decision if the government fail to address the issues.

Will Ampati man claim the leadership??

Even as the elections are not in full gear, already there are whispers and speculations by the players, as who should be the leader in the end of the day. Of course it is the prerogative and preference, of the party, which gain an absolute majority, either by itself, or by forming an alliance or support from other likeminded parties, so as to enable in forming the government. The Congress if it can resume its electoral power, there is again the possibility that the Ampati man would continue to claim the leadership. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a new entrant, would have to take its time in choosing a leader, to be crowned as chief minister.

The National People’s Party (NPP), because of its confidence in taking a lead in the election run up, has already decided, that the chief minister would be a person, from the region which elects the highest number of legislators. The two regions being, the Garo region and the Khasi-Jaintia region. This of course is the headache of the party or parties which form the government next.
