The rescue operations for the dozens of miners trapped in coal mines of East Jaintia Hills is on the run, the horrific incident which occured on 13^th December 2018. The miners were trapped after water gushed into the abandoned mine located in Ksan village, about 130 km from the state capital Shillong. BGR is the eighth largest refinery of Indian Oil Bongaigaon Refinery of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. is considered as a lifeline for many who have been directly or indirectly engaged for their livelihood particularly from the neighbouring districts. This is the only major industry in Lower Assam giving avenues for direct; indirect employment and contributing towards growth and development of the under developed part of Assam.

In an informal discussion with Associate Editor of Eastern Panorama, Bijoy Kumar Sharma at Manas Guest House in BGR Township, Chief General Manager (In-Charge) of  Bongaigaon Refinery, Mr. Gopal Chandra Sikder apprised BGR’s contribution in nation building by meeting and fulfilling people’s hopes and aspiration with a commitment on Corporate Social Responsibility Schemes.

Amid turmoil over Citizenship Amendment Bill 2008 across Northeast, the decision of central cabinet to amend Article 280 of Indian constitution seemingly the extension of the ambit of financial resources to the autonomous district councils of Tripura has appeared to be an instrument to cease the tension. Terming it as landmark move to amend the constitution, pro-BJP tribal leaders of Tripura affirmed that it was a game changer which would significantly increase the financial resources and administrative powers of the autonomous councils in VI Schedule areas of Northeast. A fortnight after agitation across the region sponsored by Northeast Students Organisations (NESO) against the citizenship amendment bill to provide shelter to the minority people belong to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Christians, and Parsis coming from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. There were enough reasons to oppose the move by the citizen of Northeastern states both tribal and non-tribal, as the region is already flooded with illegal Bangladeshi nationals. The opposition of the bill was not that much strong in western region of India only because there was no phenomenal illegal migration from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Peeved with the deplorable infrastructure and deprivation of basic amenities, students of NIT Manipur are on strike, threatening to bid the premier institute goodbye if the concerned authorities do not look into their demands. Ironically, what the students of this technical institute are demanding are something they should have been provided normally - proper classrooms, proper hostel, sufficient books in the library, a functional auditorium, adequate faculty and a well maintained campus.

PM visit to North East States 

The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited Itanagar as a part of his visit to Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Tripura. He laid foundation stone for Greenfield Airport at Itanagar and Sela Tunnel. He launched DD Arun Prabha Channel. He also unveiled several other development projects in the state from IG Park in Itanagar. PM also inspected Loin Loom operations there.

Speaking on the occasion, PM said that Arunachal is the land of rising sun. It's the confidence of the country. PM said, “Today I got opportunity to unveil projects worth more than Rs 4000 crore”. Additional projects worth Rs. 13000 crore is in progress in the state, he added. PM asked people to compare 55 months of his Government with 55 years of the previous Governments with respect to developmental activities in Arunachal Pradesh and other North Eastern states also.
