The peaceful state of Arunachal Pradesh in the last week of February was in the news for all the wrong reasons if it had to be put on the perspective of how the indigenous people of the state felt and witnessed. The vexed issue of grant of Permanent Residential Certificate (PRC) for some Non-APST (Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe) communities who have been settled in the state for a long period of time, majority of them having been rehabilitated, post the devastating earthquake of 1950 by the civil administration after consultations with the local indigenous people. These communities included the Ahoms, Adivasis, Deories, Morans, Kacharis, Mishings and Ex-Servicemen settlers and basically concentrated in the districts of Changlang and Lohit.

One such  incident that had sent shivers down our spine with its having been extremely horrendous in nature was the much-talked about the terrorist onslaught that had come about on the high-security Srinagar-Jammu highway in Pulwama district around 3.30 pm on Thursday that is on February 14 last. The  unprovoked attack that had left 49 CRPF troopers dead,  was essentially the worst-ever terror attack in the trouble-torn  Kashmir valley, which is constantly being the newspapers-headline stories across the globe  since growing insurgency had started raising its ugly head in 1989 and shook the international community. Furthermore, the district itself is an insurgency hotbed.

An uneasy calm prevails in Halomira, Merapani, Titabor and Borholla Tea Garden areas of Assam’s Jorhat and Gologhat districts following a highly tragic incident that has taken place in recent time as more than 180 people died by consuming spurious chulai (hooch) or country liquor and more than 300 people had fallen seriously ill and shifted to hospitals since February 21.

A visit to the four affected tea garden areas is to witness and encounter a deep heart-wrenching atmosphere that left a trail of tragic incidents all around and a pathetic sight of devastated families losing their near and dear while death continues to hunt. At the cremation grounds, bodies being burn in rows which continues to come at every other hour with tears rolling from the eyes of their family members with screaming and chest beating – a horrible tear socked sight!

Once again 2019 has turned out to be a disastrous year for the beleaguered Gandhi scion as he failed to reach the three digit figure in the general elections—keeping aside these political cocktails, the dubbing of a retired Captain of Indian Army Mohammad Sannaullah as a D-Voter will continue to haunt the people of Assam in the years to come.

This is not only shameful but also a violation of human rights because the person in question is a Kargil war veteran and a soldier who has sacrificed his glorious young days for his motherland.

Sannaullah’s fate was sealed on May 23 by the Foreigner’s Tribunal (FT) of Boko and the very next day he was sent to a detention camp.

In majority of cultures of Northeastern states of India, indigenous women traditionally manage trade and commerce. Manipur, the Indian border State boasts of having one of the largest networks of women’s market not only in India but in the whole of Asia.

Markets are called Keithel in Manipur and exhibit a sophisticated system of trade. The term market seems inadequate to describe what a Keithel really is and the role it plays in the local economy, culture and society. Kei translates as storehouse while thel means display, loosely translating into display of store for exchange of goods either through barter or money.

The High Court of Tripura has directed the state government to ensure non-plying of converted paddle rickshaw into motor-rickshaws in the city within next one month, as it has appeared to be the most risky mode of transportation. There has been a huge opposition and protests against the illegal motorization of paddle rickshaw in Tripura over past two years but neither left front nor BJP-IPFT government undertook any action to stop them in the street. There are reports of several serious accidents which caused permanent disability even death of the passengers. Hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by a Lawyer divisional bench of High Court comprising of Chief Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Arindam Lodh directed the Commissioner of Agartala Municipal Corporation AMC, District Magistrate (West), SP (Traffic) and Transport authorities to ensure that henceforth, without proper regulation, such manually driven rickshaws operated with a battery/motor installed therein, shall not be allowed to be plied.
