This incident was the first of its kind in the North East biggest State Zoo and has created a huge cry with Animals welfare Societies alleging the Zoo Authorities of negligence.
Canine Distemper or Hardpad disease is a contagious virus which attack the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems of wide variety of animal families including domestic and wild species of dogs, coyotes, foxes, pandas, wolves, ferrets, skunks, raccoons, and large cats and a variety of other species. Canine virus is spread through airborne exposure by sneezing or coughing from an infected dog or wild animal. This virus can also be easily transmitted by shared food and water bowls and equipment or infected mother dogs to their puppies. Any contact between wild animals and domestic dogs can facilitate the spread of the virus in both wild and domestic environment. The virus attacks the brain and kills an animal. Various species in the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden in Guwahati have come under canine distemper attack creating confusion among Zoo Officials as to how the Zoo animals are infected. According to zoo officials as many as eight jackals have died in the zoo so far. It has been alleged that the animals of the zoo are kept in very unhygienic conditions by the keepers that has been an unsolved issue since a long time. It has led to the deaths of many zoo animals before too. Few organizations alleged that the animals in the Zoo are dying due to lack of food and proper medical treatment.
