Highest Number of Un-electrified vllages in Northeast India
North East India has the highest number of unelectrified villages in the country despite being a region that has one of the highest numbers of power projects. Assam having the highest number of unelectrified villages in the country with a figure of 2,720 villages, Arunachal Pradesh with a total of 1, 578 unelectrified villages, 218 in Manipur, 911 in Meghalaya, 42 in Mizoram, 82 in Nagaland and 23 in Tripura.
Though all the North Eastern states have their electricity boards, several PSUs including North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO), National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCI) have been working towards supplying power in the region. However, the saddest part of it is that most of the electricity is being supplied to India’s neighbouring countries such as Myanmar and Bangladesh, but no attempt is being made to supply power in the region itself.
