A demand raised by Necardo, an NGO long ago fulfilled

After years of consistent efforts by Necardo, an NGO Immigration Check Point was opened at Dhubri by clearing the papers of foreign tourists to visit Bangladesh through river route from Dhubri recently. Officials of Customs and Immigration Checkpoint for Dhubri district informed that it was formally opened on May 1 by clearing papers of immigration of a delegation of six foreign tourists and two Indian citizens to travel through the river route to cross Indo-Bangladesh border and visit Bangladesh.

Officials informed that this was a big step towards promoting river-based tourism through Dhubri point, a demand for which has been raised for a long but now it came true. North East Craft and Rural Development Organisation (Necardo), an NGO had taken up the matter with the central government long ago and liaisoning with persisting effort to open the immigration check point facilities at Dhubri.

Director of Necardo, Binoy Bhattacharjee also brought out a book titled “A Journey of Development Activism in Indo-Bangla Border” couple of years ago, wherein Bhattacharjee highlighted problems and potentialities in border areas in details.

Talking to Bijoy Kumar Sharma, Associate Editor of Eastern Panorama, Bhattacharjee said that this would not only open flow of tourists through this immigration checkpoint but also promote trade between two countries.

“The trade and tourism will get a boost and fillip as it will be the cheapest and easiest route to visit Bangladesh. Necardo is also making efforts to set up market (hut)at international border area at Sonahat International Trade Centre in Dhubri like Dawki hut in Meghalaya”, Bhattacharjee informed.

The tourist team visited Asharikandi Terracotta village of Dhubri district and Gurudwara Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji and many other places during their stay in Dhubri and left for Bangladesh. The team arrived Dhubri from Pandu port at Guwahati and visited various places of tourist and cultural interests in Dhubri district, a police source informed.
