Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) complex for North Eastern Hill Region in collaboration with the Cotton Research and Development Association (CRDA) Hisar and Indian Association of Hill Farming (IAHF) organized a four day ‘International Congress’ seminar from 20th to 23rd February 2018 on “Cotton and Other Fibre Crops” at the ICAR Research complex for NEH region, Umiam. The four days event witnessed various technical sessions where 250 Scientists, Academicians, Researchers, Students etc. from various part of the country including few from abroad attended the event to deliberate on various issues related to sustainable development of fibre crops sector in India. Cotton is one of the most ancient and very important commercial crops of global importance with significant role in Indian agriculture. The congress aims to provide a common platform to agricultural scientist, extension functionaries and policy makers.

The Director of the institute Dr. N Prakash ICAR Research complex for NEH region while welcoming the dignitaries spoke about the importance of the International Congress on cotton and other Fibre Crops. He highlighted the need to organize the programme for the benefit of the farmers. He stressed on the fact that cotton is the most used fibre and India has placed itself as number one country in cotton production with 5879 thousand metric ton of cotton production.

The Governor of Meghalaya Shri Ganga Prasad was the Chief Guest for the inaugural session. Addressing the gathering, he said that “cotton is a magic fibre”, the most widely used fibre in the world and the agricultural sector needs to make the most out of it. The aim of our Prime Minister is to double the farmers’ income and it can be achieved if the intellectuals design an agricultural pattern for surplus cultivation of cotton is incorporated. The North Eastern Region needs the much needed insight into cotton cultivation. He further appreciated the efforts of ICAR in organizing such an innovative programme for the benefits of the farmers of the region. The agro climatic uniqueness of the region can be used as the boon for the region and he hoped that the technical sessions come up with the model agricultural designs for the region.
