Hmarkhawlien, the second largest Hmar village in Assam with a population of five thousand, known for its world famous delicious pineapple fruit with a very vibrant and pulsating populace, has been rocked by the killing of one of its residents, Norbert Sanate by a militant group at the end of January last. Investigation by police revealed that he owed allegiance to Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) chairman group. He was targeted by the rival group HPC (D) President group led by Zosangbera who in a statement issued to the press that he owned up responsibility for shooting down Norbert Sanate. Several grounds have been cited for shooting him down. The statement released from Sinlung general headquarters in North Mizoram was signed by L R Ruben, Information and Publicity Officer and Solomon Hmar, Publicity and Defence Officer.
The statement issued in Hmar language stated that at the behest of Hmar Christian Leaders’ Forum and Hmar Inpui, a meeting was organized on June 20 2015, in which three rebel groups, HPC (D) President, HPC (D) Chairman and Hmar National Army jointly signed an agreement, committing themselves to maintain peace. They also vowed that no group should collect taxes, indulge in fratricidal clashes and go for peaceful existence. It was alleged that Zosangbera group in total contravention of the agreement continued to extort money from general people. This was specifically alleged by Lalminthang group.
