The Kite Runner
Based on the international bestseller by Khaled Hosseini, THE KITE RUNNER is set in 20th-century Afghanistan where Amir and Hassan are young boys living in Kabul. They make an excellent team in kite competitions, with Hassan having a gift for running down kites, but after one contest, he is bullied by Assef as Amir watches from a distance without helping his friend. As the Russians and then the Taliban take over Afghanistan, Amir and his father escape to America. Even in later years, Amir is haunted by his cowardice and can’t turn down an opportunity to return to Afghanistan and “make things right again” only to find that the Kabul he once knew as a boy has been turned into a hellhole full of death and misery through years of civil war and the Russian invasion. The movie is an emotional rollercoaster but struggles to do the original book justice.
