FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT?

 

India has managed just one gold medal since 1980, when shooter Abhinav Bindra became the first individual to win the coveted medal for his country in 2008 at Beijing Olympics. “India does not have a sports culture,” says Boria Majumdar, a leading Indian sports scholar who’s authored numerous books on the topic. Indian athletes who have achieved international success are exceptions rather than products of the country’s sports system, Mr Mazumdar reasoned. Even, Bindra could not strike this time around, as he ended up fourth on the last.
