OPERATION ‘BIRDIE’ TO FLUSH OUT MILITANTS IN MEGHALAYA

South Garo Hills of Meghalaya bordering Bangladesh ended in a whimper after the State Government’s intelligence on the presence of large number of militants in the area of operation proved to be hollow. The JOINT OPERATION launched on March 25 covering an area of over 2,400 square kms of dense primary jungle and rugged hilly terrain and called off on April 3 proved to be a wild goose chase. The operation was kept under wraps as top secret until a disclosure by a local Khasi language newspaper compelled the state government to come out with an official press note.
