BLOOD BANK IN CRISIS

BLOOD BANK IN CRISIS

The Pasteur Regional Blood Bank at the Ganesh Das Hospital Shillong is facing a huge shortage of blood resulting in its failure to serve many people in emergency. The reason is the failure to obtain replacement from those who had obtained blood from the blood bank. Last year alone, a total of 143 units of blood were collected from the Pasteur Institute mostly by patients admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital and Ganesh Das Hospital and other private hospitals located in the city. The stock has been badly affected due to the failure of the patients to replace the blood that they had taken from the blood bank.

The Regional Blood Bank requires 150 units of blood in a month and nearly 2000 units in a year to serve the people. The Regional Blood Bank had collected 171 units of blood through 12 blood donations camps organised in 2008.
