Dr. Hazarika unveils own statue

Legendary singer and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee Dr. Bhupen Hazarika became the first cultural icon of India to unveil his own statue recently.

The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has taken the initiative to install the life-size statue.

More than 5000 school children lined up the streets singing songs he immortalised as eight elephants took the great singer through a three kilometer road bringing traffic to a halt.

More than 10,000 people participated in the programme as they lined up all along the roads to greet Dr. Hazarika, who has not been keeping well of late.

He also recently bagged the Asom Ratna award. As a part of the felicitation programme, a cultural rally of all the eight North – eastern states was organised.
