First Wind Power Plant in Meghalaya Inaugurated

The world’s growing dependence on known energy sources like coal, petrol and natural gas might be exhausted in the next 40 to 60 years Therefore, giving importance only to big power projects would not serve the purpose in the long run because of huge power consumption by a growing population and various industries in the State. The only way out for the State was exploitation of non-conventional and renewable sources of energy in a big way. Use of alternative sources of energy is the order of the day. Resources like the sun, wind, water and bio-energy which are inexhaustible, environment-friendly and are readily available. The power department was aiming to generate 5 percent of the total power requirement of the State through non-conventional energy in the next three to four years and 10 per cent in the coming ten years. The 5-kilo watt Wind Solar Diesel Hybrid Power Plant was inaugurated under a pilot project of the Central Government.
