Sikkim bags best Tourism performing State

As the State prepares for the International Flower Show from March 14, this year, Sikkim has bagged yet another tourism award. The State has been awarded the Best Tourism Performing State for the year 2006-07 along with State of Madhya Pradesh. This recognition has been bestowed on the basis of efforts made for overall tourism development and promotion by the State Government.
After thorough research and survey of all the States and Union Territories, the jury comprising of eminent personalities from the Ministry of Tourism and the Industry have chosen Sikkim and Madhya Pradesh as the States having outstanding contribution towards promotion of tourism in the country.
Sikkim Tourism has been able to go leaps and bounds under the leadership of its Chief Minister, Pawan Chamling who has made the tourism industry a priority sector.
Sikkim already boasts of having the tallest statue of Guru Padmasambhava at Samdruptse. Presently construction of the statue of Lord Buddha is under progress at Rabongla. This is in tune with being a part of the Buddhist circuit in the country and is destined to be a major landmark in the whole country.
The department has also taken the opportunity to convey their gratitude to all the stakeholders and NGOs for working in tandem to promote responsible, healthy, eco friendly tourism in the State.
