Sex discrimination in Sikkim?

Sex discrimination in Sikkim?

In a recently held workshop programme of Directorate of census, government of India, some speakers raised the question that the sex ratio in the country has declined at an alarming rate and in the line of declination Sikkim is also featured. The rate of the declination of the sex ration in the state in 1991 census was 878 against per 1000 males and that has declined to 875 in 2001. The most declined sex ratio states are in Western India like Haryana, Punjab and Delhi.

The decrease in sex ratio in Western India is a stark indication that there is still the prevalence of sex discrimination and dowry system. These are the factors behind the sex ratio declination.

But in Sikkim as of now there are no such reports of sex discrimination such as dowry, etc. Even though, the census data has shown the declination of sex ratio which is a matter of concern for the Sikkim society.

On the other hand, the experts think that while census was being conducted, the people who have migrated from outside the state might have been included in the census data that led to decrease of the sex ratio of the state. If this is so there is nothing to say. But if the statements that sex ratio has declined among the higher literate society is any thing to go by, then it can be said that the social stigma like sex discrimination has got its foot in the door of Sikkim.
