NEC resents Centre’s Apathy

Most members of the North East Council including its Chairman Arunachal Pradesh Governor Mr. Srendranath Dwivedi, during the thirty sixth meeting of the Council which concluded at Itanagar on May 7, 1993 hauled the Union Ministry over the coals for not paying adequate attention to the requirements of the Council under its care.
The brewing discontent among the Council members exploded openly with the Council Chairman, while addressing a press conference after the conclusion of the meeting, denouncing the absence in the meeting of any representative of the Union Home Ministry, the nodal body in charge of the NEC.
The agitated members, smarting under the Council’s ineffectiveness, resorted to a unanimous resolution demanding a complete reorientation of the high powered body consisting of the Governors and Chief Ministers of the seven Northeastern states.
The Chairman of the Council said that the meeting has adopted a resolution urging the Centre to substantially hike the plan outlay, as the allocation of Rs. 265 crores for 1993 – 94 was inadequate to complete the ongoing schemes; besides several new schemes that are to be taken up on a priority basis.
