Public Health Engineering

  • Under Rural Water Supply Scheme, drinking water is now provided to almost all villages. A total number of 22928 water reservoirs in 385 villages were constructed and 1800 hand pumps were installed in 285 villages. PHE also improved 1220 village springs.
  • Under the Urban Water Supply Programme, the Greater Aizwal WSS PH-I, Greater Lunglei WSS, Greater Saiha WSS, Greater Serchhip WSS and Greater Kolasib WSS have been completed. Besides these, the Greater Aizwal WSS PH-II, Greater Champhai WSS and Composite N. Kawnpui WSS are also on the anvil.
  • In an effort to improve sanitation, pit latrines for 6610 village families, 163 schools and 233 anganwadis were dug.

Horticulture

The department has initiated schemes for anthurium, rose and orchid plantations all over the state. There are now 400 anthurium growers, 326 growers of bird of paradise and 48 growers of orchids. Between 20 October - 28 February 2006, a record number of 75,000 roses were sold.

  • Under Technology Mission, 3796 hectares for growing passion fruit and 1423 hectares for vineyards have been covered. Under BAFFACOS, 200 hectares for passion fruit and 150 hectares for grapes are being developed.
  • 1,28,000 seedlings of papaya have been distributed to 283 farmers.
  • International variety ‘Grand Naine’ tissue cultured banana plants have been introduced to increase domestic produce and improve quality.
  • Plantation of spices such as turmeric and bird’s eye chilly has been taken up in a big way.
  • Production of squash, cabbage and potato have increased tremendously.
  • Vermiculture has been taken up in a huge way since Mizoram was declared an organic state in 2004.

Sports  & Youth Services

  • In the past 20 years, the department has hosted a number of state, regional and national level competitions in football, table tennis, boxing, weight lifting, hockey, badminton, judo, taewondo and karate, among others.
  • All India Civil Services Badminton tournaments were twice hosted in 1992 and 2004.
  • Under the aegis of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), a well-equip Contact Sports Centre was established in 1989 at Aizwal where training is imparted to sportspersons in various disciplines. Sport Scholarship Scheme under SAI has also been implemented for the past 5 years.
  • In total, 465 medals have been won in various sports disciplines at the National level.
  • At the International level, medals and accolades have been won for boxing, archery, Wushu, Taekwondo, kick-boxing, football, hockey and basketball.
  • Under the National Cadet Corps, the 20th Inde. Company and Mizo Bn. NCC are still successfully formed to date. Steps are being taken to start NCC Air Wing for which Rs. 5 lakhs has been set aside.
  • The National Service was established in 1998 and till today continues to perform laudable social work.
  • Adventure Sports such as rafting, para-sailing, mountaineering, spellunking and artificial wall climbing are also being strongly promoted.
  • The Mizoram State Sports Council has successfullly undertaken construction of 48 playgrounds, 53 indoor stadiums and sports complex at Aizawl, Kolasib, Champhai, Mamit, Lunglei, Lawngtlai and Saiha districts.
