Advani Launches election campaign

While speaking at Guwahati, Mr. Advani said, “I was told yesterday’s blast was different from the previous ones in Delhi or Ahmedabad, as Bangladeshi migrants were involved in it.” He was addressing a public rally which saw a large number of attendees. This statement came two days after seven alleged Huji activists were gunned down by security forces at Dhubri before they could carry out a series of planned attacks in Guwahati city. Even though he L K Advani adressing a public meeting at Guwahatidrew attention towards the problem of Bangladeshi Migrants, Mr. Advani was careful enough to clarify that his statements should not, in any way, be taken as anti – Muslim campaign. He reassured that indigenous Muslims would not be affected by the BJP’s efforts to address this problem should it come to power in Assam. Mr. Advani also raised the questions of Islamic fundamentalist groups and the Amarnath shrine board, subtly fingering the Congress administration in power in Assam under Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. This has come in the wake of Khiren Rijiju’s (MP from Arunachal Pradesh) very controversial statement made recently in Guwahati where he alleged that the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was handing over Assam to the Bangladeshis on a silver platter.
Mr. Advani’s trip to Shillong was also not without incident. A Shillong law student had sent an e – mail to the media in which he unveiled his plans to assassinate Mr. Advani in the name of the Indian Mujahideen. Needless to say, he was arrested within 24 hours.
In Shillong, Mr. Advani addressed a public meeting at the Asom Kristi Kendra, Dhankheti where he assured the predominantly Christian populace of Shillong that the culprits in the religious genocide against Christians in Karnataka and Orissa would be brought to book so that such a thing does not happen again in the future.
During this function, the BJP felicitated two achievers, Mr. Torak Kharpran who won gold and Mr. Vijay Thapa who won silver at the recently concluded National Boxing Championships at Bhatinda. During this visit to Shillong, Mr. Advani met the Chief Minister of Meghalaya Dr. Donkupar Roy, State Planning Board Chairman, Mr. P. A. Sangma and various religious leaders. He also laid the foundation stone for the BJP party office at Bivar Road, Oakland.
