Kalpana Choudhury, Sarita Dev,Nagisetty Usha - A PROMISING PUGILIST

Kalpana Choudhury, an Assamese girl has made India proud by winning a gold medal in the 48 kg category in the Fourth Asian Women’s Boxing Championship which was held in Guwahati. Kalpana defeated Ngo Thi Phuong of Vietnam to bag the first gold medal for India in the event and another girl from the North East Sarita Devi won India its second by defeating Ren Can – can of China in the 52 kg group finals. Another Indian boxer Nagisetty Usha won the gold medal in the 57 kg category by defeating Imanbayeva Zhuldazay of Kazakhstan.

A jubilant Kalpana is quoted to have said, “Although I was feeling a pain in my right shoulder, I forgot everything when I entered the ring and started unleashing punches for my country.” This girl who hails from Margherita is no stranger to international success as she had earlier won a bronze medal in the 2005 World Championships and is hopeful of winning gold in the forthcoming World Championships to be held in China in November.
