Vintage Car Rally

Apart from the World War II jeeps, a Model A Ford 1927, also took part in the rally. This car had the privilege to transport Mother Theresa from Shillong to Umiam. A Morris Minor owned by Harish Das of Tezpur, Assam also participated in this year’s edition. Also a 1904 Model of Ford T Vintage Car that featured in the movie ‘Gandhi’ by Richard Attenborough were the cynosure of all eyes at the Vintage Car Rally. The vehicle was bought by Mr. Honsen Lyngdoh of Shillong from a Britisher for just Rs. 250. The Opel 1969 that once belonged to Biswagit, a Bollywood Star was another delight, the car is now owned by Mr. B.K. Bhattacharjee of Laban. The Harley Davidson WLA 1942, the Only Harley Davidson bike in the North East also took part in the rally. The proud owner of the monster bike Mr. Y.S. Shullai said that it was expensive to keep such a bike but he was happy to have it because of its antiquity. The Dodge Weapons Carrier was also another attraction of the rally.

Besides those from Shillong, antique vehicles from other parts of the North East like Tezpur, Kohima, Guwahati and Jowai participated in the antique car rally. Mr. Ashok Lyngdoh, General Secretary of Antique Wheels of the North East, said that the vintage car rally was aimed at bringing together all the anique vehicles of the Northeast under one platform. Mr. Ashok Lyngdoh also said that the Vintage Car Rally was first started in 1974-75 by Mr. Vinay Kohli, Deputy Commissioner of Shillong. According to Mr. Lyngdoh, the Deputy Commissioner organized two Vintage Car Rallies during his tenure.
