Mukul Sangma

He rose from an Independent candidate to the helm of political affairs in Meghalaya and subsequently became the most successful Chief Minister of Meghalaya. The physician turned politician is on hat trick and will continue to prove his worth as the leader in the upcoming State election. He is currently contesting from the Indian National Congress party representing Ampati constituency. Graduate from St Anthony's College Shillong he went on to study medicine at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal and passed out in 1989.

His journey began in 1993 as an Independent candidate from Ampati where he won and associated himself with the Congress. His victory in 1998 from Congress got him many assignments in the Government.  Before being the chief Minister in 2010 he has held many important Cabinet portfolios including the post of Deputy Chief Minister during DD Lapang regime. Following the 2005 twin firing incidents in Tura and Williamnagar there was prediction by many senior politicians about his downfall at time when he was holding the post of Deputy Chief Minister. Even legendary politician like P.A Sangma took this opportunity to established NCP all over Garo hills. However Mukul Sangma not only overcome the MBOSE imbroglio but also shocked everyone when he got re- elected in the 2008 Election.

Mukul sangma termed as “under dog” the people of the state including top politician closely watched the tussles that happen in the politics of the state especially in 2008-2010 when all political parties were busy in changing leadership. The year 2008- 2010 can be considered as “political turmoil” in Meghalaya when there was constantly changing of Chief Minister. Dr Sangma subsequently replaces D.D Lapang for the post of Chief Minister in April 2010. Despite being the Chief Minister there were cry for his replacement way back from 2010 and the names such as Charles Pyngrope, Prof RC Laloo had reached the National office but ultimately it was Dr. Sangma who emerged victory. It is not wrong to say that Dr Sangma was strongly supported by the Congress High Command.

The 2013 Assembly polls saw Dr Sangma grow more powerful with the increase in the tally of the Congress legislators from seven in 2008 to 13 in 2013 in Garo Hills alone. Though the Congress won 16 seats in Khasi-Jaintia Hills, the AICC and the Congress legislators supported Dr Sangma to the post of the next Chief Minister.
