Valley-Dwellers The worst victims of Assam’s flood

Every Indian is aware of the destructive and regretful condition of the people of char areas or the areas of the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys. These remorsed conditions occurred mainly in Assam due to the flood and erosion created mainly by the mighty Brahmaputra. It destroys the minimum standard living conditions of the char or valley areas.

Samuel Manda Sangma

He was first inducted in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) member in 1998 from Gasuapara constituency as an independent candidate. After associating himself with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) he got elected in the legislative assembly in 2003 from Dalu constituency. In 2008 state election he contested from congress and got re-elected. Similarly during 2013 election he contested as an independent candidates from Baghmara constituency where he won the maiden (post delimitation) Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. He currently served as the parliamentary Secretary in-charge Home Guard and civil defence and housing.

CPC gear up for Puja

The Central Puja Committe (CPC) Shillong is set to celebrate eco-friendly Puja which will start from 26^th this month. The committee has set up around 231 pandal for this auspicious occasion out which 64 are in Shillong or its nearby place. 

Speaking to press the committee President Shri Naba Bhattacharjee informed that more than 90 percent of the idols are coloured by non-toxic vegetables dye. This will help in controlling the pollution of rivers when idols are immersion. The committee also added that the cleaning drive will be conducted before and after Puja at the Wahumkhrah River which is used for Durga Puja.

Meanwhile the Police Department is working hand in hand with the committee to check any untoward incident. The department has asked all committee representatives to install CCTVs at every Pandal to make it easier in keeping watch.

Land Rights For Indigenous People

Assam, as we understand is the most resource-rich and most productive State in the Northeast India. As a result of which, it ought to have by now been a power-house of growth.  But what has prevented the State from becoming so, is its plethora of intractable decades-old issues afflicting it and one such issue affecting the State for a prolonged spell of time is no other than the problem of illegal encroachment of all kinds of land available in the State like revenue lands, forestlands, satra lands, lands of tribal blocks and belts, by suspected immigrant from Bangladesh and non-tribal people including industrialists.

Marketing conclave for Garo Hills Farmers, Entrepreneurs 

With the objective to help farmers including entrepreneurs to understand the concept of commodity market dynamics and to enable them to significantly and enhance the value of their produces through branding and other creditable practices the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), Basin Development Unit (BDU) today organised an awareness on marketing of agricultural products and value addition at Ampati.

During the seminar a panel discussions on market infrastructure besides marketing of agri products and value addition was held followed by a presentation on agriculture markets in Garo Hills. Commodity trading on spices was also addressed. Resource persons for the conclave included Rajesh Patidar, Vice President, Agriwatch, New Delhi, Biplab Sarma, Commodity Analyst, Agriwatch, New Delhi and Dr Abhigyan Bhattacharjee, Associate Professor, NEHU amongst others.

Apart from farmers’ representatives from the GHADC, DCIC, Horticulture department, North East Green Tech Private Limited, APEDA, Organic Majuli, Mission Organic, and the Forestry departments was also presence at the seminar.  Addressing the gathering during the inaugural session, South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner and Chairman, IBDLP, Cyril Darlong Diengdoh said that the district administration was always looking out for opportunities for farmers in terms of creating more profitable markets. He said that the state being primarily an agrarian society it was imperative to understand our natural capital and resources.
