QUESTION OF SENIOR AND JUNIOR

A  question  has  cropped    up  as  who  is  the  senior  or  junior  minister  in  the  cabinet  of  the  present  Meghalaya  Democratic  Alliance.   As  the  Government  is  composed  of  different  political  leaders  of  the  National  People’s  Party,  the  Bharatiya  Janata  Party  and  other  regional  parties,  including  the  United  Democratic  Party,  the  Hills  State  People’s  Democratic  Party  and  others,  the  respective  parties  do  have  senior  veterans,  who  however  do  not   wish  to  pose  as  being  senior  or  junior  ministers.   It  however  all  depends  on  the  portfolios,  the  ministers  are  given  charge of.  Prestone  Tynsong,  considered  to  be  a  veteran   leader,  however  believe  that  all   ministers  have  collective  responsibilities  and  also  have  equal  roles  in  decision  and  policy  making.

 LAST ROUND OF POLL

Meghalaya   is  all  set  for  poll  contest   of  the  remaining  two  seats,  Williamnagar and  Ampathi   in   the   sixty  seat  assembly.   Political   parties   have already started gearing poll campaign.  Elections  were  not  held  at  Williamnagar  as  the  National  Congress  Party  candidate  Jonathone  Sangma    was  killed  in  a  bomb  blast.   The  party  has  however  decided    to  set  up Jonathone’s  wife  Krinilla  Marak  to  contest.  Already Krinilla is receiving sympathy support from the electorate. The  Ampathi  seat  was  won  by  the  Chief  Minister  Mukul  Sangma,  who  also  won  from  the  Songsak  constituency. He  has  however  decided   not  to  contest  the  Ampathi  seat,  leaving   it to  his  daughter.   The  date  for  Williamnagar  has  already  been  announced  on  April  27,  whether  the  sitting  member  Deborah  Marak  of  the  Congress  would  be   able  to  retain  the  Williamnagar  seat,   remains  to   be   a  big  question  mark.

A  GOOD GESTURE

It  is  often  a  habit  that  any  new  Government   that  assume  office,  would  neglect  what  the  previous Government  had  done  without  any  introspection. Realizing this, the present leader  of the state Conrad K. Sangma, feels that it would be a wrong attitude to bypass initiatives taken by the previousGovernment. Things should be taken and reviewed in the right  perspective in the continuation of whatever good or acceptable done by the previous  Government  and  not  to  just  discard  without  proper  examination.  Everything  is connected  from  what  is  being done  yesterday.  Anything  good  need  a  proper  follow  up,  anything  bad  should  be  left  out. This  should  be  a  good  gesture  of  the  present Government,  which  the  Chief  Minister  feels. Many foundation stones  were  laid  by  the  previous Government, specially  just  before  the  elections. If  some  of  the  foundation  stones  are  meant  for  good  schemes, completion  of  such  works  can  be  taken  up.

AT LONG LAST

At  long  last  senior  Minister  Prestone  Tynsong,  now  occupy  the  chair  of  Deputy  Chief  Minister,  though  earlier  it  was  hinted  that  he  was  to  lead  the Meghalaya  Democratic  Alliance  Government.  Elected  as  a  legislator  in  2003,  Tynsong  has  gained  experience ,  also  as  being  the  Chief  Executive  member  of  the  Khasi  Hills  District  Council.  Possibly  this  time  he  had  aspired  to  be  the  Chief  Minister  of  the  state  but  the  coalition  partners  had  instead  chosen  Conrad  K.  Sangma,  who  as  member  of  Parliament  has  more  links  with  the  national  leadership  in  New  Delhi.  Tynsong , it  seems  do  not  mind  much  of  the  coalition  decision,  as  he  says  he  would  be  the  same, yesterday, today  and  tomorrow.  He  believes  in  what  will be- will  be, whether  it  is  big  or  small.
