STUDENTS AND FISHES

The  Khasi  Students  Union  has  taken  up  seriously  to  having  independent  probe  in  the  mysterious  discovery  of  dead  fishes  in  the  River  Kynshi  in West  Khasi  Hills  in  the  Ranikor   area  bordering  Bangladesh.  This  has  alerted  the   Meghalaya  State  Pollution  Control  Board  to  investigate,  also   in  nearby  areas  such  as  the  Rilang  river.  It  is  highly  suspected  that  samples  of   uranium  drilling   being  carried  out  in  the  area  had  caused  this  phenomena .  This  has  caused  speculation of  related  health  problems,  as  unscrupulous  people  out  in  collecting  money,  have  also  collected   the  dead  floating  fishes  and  selling  in  the  nearby  markets. It  is  therefore  encouraging  that  the  students  are   alert, taking  interest  in  extracurricular  activities,  such  as   the  protection  of  nature  and  the  environment  which  is  the need of an hour.

'WATER EVERYWHERE but EVEN NOT A DROP TO DRINK' 

There  is  a saying,  that  water  is  everywhere  but  not  a  drop  to  drink,  where  water  scarcity  exist even  in  Sohra,  the  rainiest  spot  on  earth.  However  the  State  Minister  for  Public Health Engineering, Samlin Malngniang, hopes  that  water  supply  would  be  improved,  under  the  North   East  Special  Infrastructure  Development  Scheme.  Already  proposals  have  been  submitted  for  improvement  of  water  supply  to   all  villages  in  the  state.  Besides   the   water  supply  from  the  Greater  Shillong  Water  Supply Scheme, the  phase  three  of  the  project  was  sanctioned  in  2008,  yet  the  project  was delayed  for  non-release  of  funds,  amounting  to  rupees  193.49  crores.  Water  can  be  tapped  from  other  sources  like  rivers  and  springs  and  increasing  the catchment  areas,  with  the  implementation  of  more  water  supply schemes. The Tura legislator Agatha K.  Sangma has championed for the use of filtered water in the Assembly and not bottled water.  According to her, filtered water is more clean and healthy.

VISITING MINISTERS 

There  are  in  all  eleven   cabinet  ministers  in  the present  Meghalaya  Democratic  Alliance  Government. The  Chief  Minister  Conrad  Sangma  has  thought  it is best  for  the  ministers  to  become    closer  to  the  people.   The  Chief  had  therefore   directed,  that  in  every  three  months, the minister should take  an  outing   from  their  office  chambers  in  the  secretariat  and  go  out  visiting  the  districts  to  have  a  firsthand  knowledge of  what  is  going  on  in the  field  of  administration  and  also  in  the  execution   of  plans  and  projects of  the  actual  work. It  is  certainly  not  only  a  refreshing  outing,  but  a  face  to  face  contact,  not  only  of  the  districts  administration  but  also  with  the  traditional  administrators  of  the  various  durbars  of  the  Syiems,  Lyngdoh,  Doloi,  Wahadadar,  Nokmas.  This  would  be  less  of  formalities,  but  of  serious  discussions  of  ground  realities.  In addition,  the  ministers  instead  of  building  massive  mansions  in  capital  Shillong   can  have  affordable  farm  houses  in  the  rural  areas,  where  they  can  catch  up  with   moments  of  relaxation.

DELHI CHALO 

Senior  leader  of  the  Meghalaya Democratic  Alliance  Government, Prestone Tynsong,  has  called upon  legislators  to  accompany  him  to  New  Delhi  to  meet  central  leaders  to  discuss  urgently  matters  of  state,  like  the  banning  of  coal  mining  by  the  National  Green  Tribunal  in  the  state,  which  have  affected  the  revenue  of  the  state.  The  banning  of  coal  mining  came  into  effect in  the  year  2014 but  is  still  continuing.  The  previous  Government  had  brought  a  resolution for  lifting  to  the  ban  but  to  no  avail.  The  State  Government  had  also  appointed  committees  in  working  out  ways  and  means  to  resume  coal  mining  with  certain  safeguard   to  the  environment.  The  State  Government  has  suffered  a  loss  of  rupees  416 crores,  since  coal  mining was  banned  in  the  state.  Meanwhile  illegal  stone  quarrying,  which  was  banned  in  the  state  have   mushroomed  again  in  West  Garo  Hills.
