THE  LONE WINNER

Adelbert  Nongrum  is  the  lone  winner  of  the  Khun  Hynniewtrep  National  Awakening  Movement (KHNAM), from  the  North  Shillong  Mawkhar  constituency,  which is  looked  upon   and  regarded   as the  think-tank  of  intellectuals   of   the    entire   Ri  Hynniewtrep-land  of  the  Khasi-Pnar  region  of Eastern Meghalaya . It is here in Mawkhar where   many  historic institutions  exist,  such   as   the  Khasi   National  Durbar, the  Seng  Khasi, traditional  organisation , also  being   the  base  of  the   Christian  Presbyterian  denomination   of   Khasi- Jaintia  Hills, also  having  reputed  educational  institutions and   being   the   hot-bed  of   political   movements,  such as the   struggle   for   achieving  a  separate  Hill State,  now known  as  Meghalaya.  It  was   here  that   many  national   leaders  have   addressed  lectures   in  the  country’s   independence  movement. It   is  here that produced the first  ever  women Cabinet Minister  Kong  Mavis  Dunn   Lyngdoh  in  the  Gopinath  Borloloi  Ministry  of  Assam.    For   the  last   twenty  years  Mawkhar  had  remained  a Congress  bastion,  the   last  who  represented  was  Kong   Roshan  Warjri,  who  did  not  contest   the   2018  elections.    It is  therefore  a credit  for  KHNAM    candidate   Adelbert  Nongrum to  be  the   lone  winner   of  the  party,   defeating   the  Bharitya  Janata   Party   (BJP),  candidate,  J.A.  Lyngdoh,  by  a narrow   margin   of   406 votes.

PORTFOLIOS AND PERFORMANCE

As  the  new  Government is settling  down,  portfolios  have  been  accorded  for  the  cabinet  ministers, for taking respective charge that  have  been  handed  down  to  them. It is therefore   the responsibility  of each  minister  to  work  in  tandem  with  the  respective  officials of the  departments,  with   follow  up actions, so that  there  is  no wastage   of  time  or  money.  For  the   last   twenty years  of  Congress rule, most of the rural areas have no  connectivity worth  the   name,  specially  agricultural  areas, where  marketing of the  produce  is  needed   to  reach  trade   centres.  The  development  projects   and    schemes  should   be   realistic,  according  to   the  needs   of  the  people,   which   all  along   was    not  so. There has to be a  close alliance of the  different  ministers,  also with traditional administrative institutions in gaining their  confidence  right from  the  planning   to  the  implementation  stage. The  State  Planning Board, was busy building castles  in the  clouds,  leading  to the  stagnation  of  ground to earth welfare  activities.

The apathy by the central media (be it electronic or print) has given rise to the sense of distrust, frustration and anguish amongst the people of this region. The unification of the cultural heritage, which seems to be the pride of this nation, has been remaining on papers alone. Are the concerned central agencies ignorant and unaware of the distinct cultures of the eight North-Eastern states, be it Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura or Sikkim?
